RangeMax Wireless-N / Wireless-N
Draft 802.11n Gear for Home or Small Office
The RangeMax Wireless-N and Wireless-N line of products from NETGEAR consists of routers, adapters, and access points targeted primarily to home or small office deployments. The gear is all Draft 802.11n compliant, with backwards compatibility to 802.11a or 802.11b/g connections and maximum wireless communication speeds approaching 300 Mb/sec, depending on model.
Features common to the entire product line include management via a browser-based GUI, NAT support and Stateful Packet Inspection firewalls in the routers, 64- and 128-bit WEP encryption, WPA-PSK and WPA2-PSK, DoS attack protection, IDS, and DMZ support.
In the RangeMax camp are several routers, most of which include a four port Ethernet switch in addition to their wireless capabilities. Notable among these are the WNDR3300 with support for both 2.5 and 5 GHz connectivity (and fallback to 802.11a or 802.11b/g); and the WNR3500, a single radio (802.11n/g/b) boasting Gig Ethernet connections. Each of these ships with the vendor's "Smart Wizard" installation CDs and includes "Push 'N' Connect" technology for push-button security configuration between the router and client devices. Among the adapters available in the line are those supporting PCI, PC Card, and USB client options. Notable among these is the WNDA3100, a dual-band adapter that connects to the PC via USB.
In the Wireless-N camp are now two routers; the WNR2000, an 802.11n/g/b router with a four port switch and support for WPS (WiFi Protected Setup) and automated firmware updates; and the new DGN2000, which combines the Wireless-N router with a built-in DSL modem. Also available are bundled kits of each of these which include both the router and a USB 2 adapter (model WN111). The vendor specifically notes the "green" features of the Wireless-N line; including packaging consisting of 80% recycled materials, Energy Star-qualified power supplies, and on/off switches. The DGN2000 additionally includes an on/off switch specifically for wireless connectivity.
The NETGEAR Wireless-N gear is available now; the newer WNR2000 and DGN2000 are priced at $89 and $129. The WNB2100 combo kit, which marries the WNR2000 and a USB adapter, is priced at $129; while the DGNB2100 kit (combining the DGN2000 and a USB adapter) is available only in Europe and Asia.
